Release March 26th, 2010 Grinnell Police Department partners with Iowa ABD
Office for tobacco education and enforcement. On March 10th, 2010, the Grinnell Police Department conducted a 2nd round of city wide tobacco compliance checks. Local businesss passed with a 100% compliance rate this round. Officer Dan Johnson, the police departments tobacco compliance coordinator wanted to commend local businesss on their efforts to help keep tobacco out of the hands of our local youth. Throughout the next year, Officer Johnson will be offering free Iowa Pledge Retailer Certification Classes to local tobacco retailers where the clerks will learn the fundamentals of Iowas tobacco laws, as well as how to calculate a customers age and effectively refuse illegal sales. Clerks who successfully complete an online exam will be Iowa Pledge Certified and the retail establishment will receive an affirmative defense against a civil penalty if the certified clerk makes an illegal sale. The Iowa Pledge Retailer Certification Classes are a great way for clerks to prepare themselves to refuse illegal tobacco sales, Officer Johnson said. The classes will help retailers maintain a compliant and responsible establishment. Criminal penalties for selling tobacco to a minor include a $100 fine for the first offense, a $250 fine for the second offense and $500 fine for third and subsequent offenses. By partnering with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, we hope to educate clerks and maintain a compliant retail environment in our community. Officer Johnson said. If any business is interested in sending employees through the Retailer Certification class, please contact Officer Dan Johnson at 641-236-2650 for more information.
