On
11/11/2004
, members of the Grinnell Police Department, the Poweshiek County
Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Department of Narcotics Enforcement, and the
Jasper/Poweshiek/Pella Drug Taskforce executed two search warrants in
conjunction resulting in the discovery of two methamphetamine labs.
These search warrants were parts of an ongoing criminal investigation.
During the execution of the search warrant at
3245 35th Ave
,
Grinnell
,
IA
, in an outbuilding, several items and products
consistent with the manufacturer of methamphetamine were located and seized as
evidence. This includes
“sludge”, a substance created as a by-product during the clandestine
production of methamphetamine. The
persons residing at this residence are not suspect in this investigation, but
it is believed that Michael Shawn England is responsible for the criminal
evidence that was located and seized.
Due the very hazardous nature and volatile potential of the chemicals
and ingredients used in the processing and synthesis of methamphetamine the
Grinnell Fire Department was deployed to the scene at 3245 35th
ST., Grinnell, IA, to monitor safety and to be prepared should an emergency
decontamination be warranted. Both
search warrants were served and executed without any incident.
During the execution of the search
warrant at
926 ½ Main ST.
,
Grinnell
,
IA
, the residence of Michael Shawn England,
several items consistent with the manufacturer of methamphetamine were located
and seized as evidence. The items
in this “lab” were less volatile and of lower risk not requiring the fire
department to be deployed to this scene or any other emergency action taken.
Also found at this scene was usable methamphetamine product.
Due to the danger and the chemical complexity of the evidence seized in
these two search warrants, it was necessary to summons the aid of the Iowa
Department of Narcotics Enforcement Clandestine Lab Team.
The members of the lab team receive special training and equipment that
allow them to safely handle and preserve evidence samples and exhibits so they
can be later examined in a criminal laboratory environment.
Michael Shawn England has been taken into custody and charged with
Manufacturing Methamphetamine, a Class B Felony, pursuant to the Code of Iowa.
A Class B Felony upon conviction is punishable by a penalty of a prison
sentence not to exceed 25 years.
England
will be held until he receives his initial
court appearance sometime on
11/12/2004
where the court will then issue a bond or other custodial release
conditions.
