The Grinnell Police Department actively operates under a criminal interdiction patrol philosophy.  This system is designed to detect crimes and the persons who commit them through aggressive traffic enforcement and aggressive patrol tactics.

With Grinnell's position close to and adjacent to US Interstate 80; this community is greatly impacted by traveling or migrant crime and criminals.  Information and studies have shown that today's criminals are more mobile and spread there crimes to multiple communities  lowering the risk of detection and capture.  Also persons who transport controlled substances typically use the nations roadways to move their products.

Through aggressive enforcement of traffic laws the Grinnell Police Department tackles two issues.  First it helps improve traffic safety and reduce potential accidents causing loss of life and property.  Second it gives the officer the opportunity to  conduct field investigations that may produce confiscated drugs and weapons,  the arrest of drunk drivers and driver impaired by drugs, the arrest of persons who's drivers license may be suspended because or drunk driving and other crimes, and persons who are wanted on arrest warrants.
